Paddington Chandelier

Paddington The Musical - The Savoy Theatre 2024

Designed by Tom Pye

A crashing chandelier created for Paddington: The Musical.
This was an unusual brief: the chandelier needed to come in at 50 kg, stand 2.4 m by 1.2 m, and yet be dropped in every performance, convincingly collapse on stage, then be reset and crashed again and again. The piece was constructed from laser-cut sheet steel and over 10,000 crystals, with a mechanism driven by compression and gas springs that allowed the chandelier to appear as though it were folding in and collapsing into itself.
